My mood shifts exponentially by the time I make it to dinner. My father is pissed right off the bat because I had to Uber over. He should consider himself grateful I learned my lesson from drinking and driving the last time.
Iâm trying to politely chew through this hockey puck of a roast my new mommy cooked for us, but itâs getting difficult. I can feel my fatherâs eyes searing a hole in the side of my head. I count the seconds until he clears his throat.
âI scheduled a meeting with Judge Cooper next week to discuss your internship this summer.â
I arch a brow. âWhat are you talking about? I still have ball in the summer.â
âLaw school is only two years away. That should be your focus.â
I shove another bite in my mouth, unaffected. I take my sweet time chewing and I'm pretty sure the heat from his irritation raises the temperature in the room. "Um, no. Next year is the first year I'm eligible for the draft. I can't start slacking now.â
He laughs. "You think you'll get drafted?" He shakes his head. "You're not that good, son."
Victoria, who's remained relatively quiet, shifts in her chair. Her eyes dart between us, landing on his. "That's not a nice thing to say."
My father doesn't falter. "He needs to learn how to be realistic. Blowing smoke up his ass doesn't do him any good." His hard eyes shift to me. "You can't keep strolling through life thinking everything will always get handed to you. You need a respectable career if you expect to be taken seriously."
I can taste the bile rising in my throat. It's so hard not to flip my shit in these moments, but I pull from deep within and hope for the best.
"I never said I wouldn't go to law school. I just want to finish what I started." I laugh under my breath. "Even if I do suck."
"You don't suck," Victoria chimes in. My father narrows his eyes at her, but she keeps talking, giving him an equally stern look back. "No, you shouldn't say things like that to him. Is that how you'll speak to our son?"
I catch the twitch in my father's eye, but she doesn't waver. I, however, feel like I just got the wind knocked out of me. I raise my arm across the table, breaking the stare-off between them.
"Wait a fucking minute." I point to her. "You're pregnant."
She nods and the bile rises again. I swallow it down and face my father. "You're fucking kidding me?"
He ignores me and directs his attention to her, leaning over closer. "Of course not, sweetheart. Our son won't be like him."
I laugh. "Are you fucking serious?"
This catches his attention. His fist slams on the table, making Victoria jump. "Watch your mouth."
"Okay, sure." I push back from the table. "I see what this is." I stand up from my seat and motion around with my arm. "This is your attempt to create some kind of family to make your new one seem better.
